Accessibility

Last reviewed: October 21, 2026.

We want everyone to be able to play. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA on every page and in every game.

What we do

  • Keyboard: every game can be played with a keyboard alone. In Chartbreaker, each hidden year has its own slider you move with the arrow keys. In Mapinion, every place can be picked from a list or by search, as well as on the map.
  • Screen readers: buttons, sliders and answer boxes have names that screen readers announce, and results are announced as they appear.
  • Charts and maps: every chart and map on a reveal or an archive page has a table you can open instead ("Show as table").
  • Color and contrast: text and lines meet the contrast guidelines.
  • Zoom and small screens: pages work at 200% zoom and on narrow phone screens without scrolling sideways.
  • Motion: we follow your device's reduced motion setting, which stops the cave's flicker and shake, the ticker's slide and other movement. Nothing flashes more than three times a second.

Timed rounds

Every game uses a clock as part of play: Chartbreaker 20 seconds a chart, Stalagmight's lantern 25 seconds a chamber, Guessus 20 seconds a question, Mapinion 20 seconds a map. The clock is what the games are about, so it can't be turned off or extended (WCAG's "essential" exception). Screen readers hear when 5 seconds are left.

Known limitations

  • Share squares: shared results use colored emoji squares. Screen readers read each square aloud, which can be long. The share text also gives your score as a number.
  • Ads: ads come from Google and its partners. We choose where ads go and keep them away from the game, but we do not control the ads themselves, which may not meet these guidelines.

How we check

Before each game opens, and whenever we change one, we test it with a keyboard alone, with a screen reader, at 200% zoom, with reduced motion on and against the contrast guidelines.

Compatibility

The games are built for current versions of Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge, on phones and computers. They use HTML, CSS, JavaScript and SVG.
